It was great to meet up with members of the Sheffield group, with members travelling from as far as Buxton. There were about 20 of us throughout the day.

Join us at The Hepworth Wakefield on Saturday 15th October and be part of the

33rd World Wide SketchCrawl.

Join us any time between 10am and 5pm, come for the day or just call in for a quick sketch.

Everyone is welcome, bring a friend, bring the kids or come alone - you'll soon be in company.

The Hepworth is a great place to sketchcrawl; a fantastic art collection, beautiful gallery spaces, great views over the waterfront area and a cafe. If the weather is fine there are the gallery grounds to explore and the waterfront and Chantry Chapel very close by.

No experience is necessary and you don't need special equipment - just pencil and paper. Bring a sketchbook if you have one, but any bit of paper will do why not doodle in your diary or sketch on the back of an envelope

More details on times via The Hepworth website including the following guidelines for drawing in the galleries to make sure everyone has an enjoyable experience:

Only dry materials are allowed to be used in the gallery, no liquids or pastels, pencil and a sketch pad are ideal to sketch with. If you want to work your sketches up with other materials please use the picnic area in the Learning Studios, where materials are not restricted.

Photography is limited in the galleries and photos can only be taken in Gallery 4 and 5 without the use of flash.

SketchCrawl was founded by Enrico Casarosa. People will be SketchCrawing across the world

on 15th October including Australia, Denmark, France, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Spain and USA.

SketchCrawl at Yorkshire Sculpture Park Saturday 10th September

SketchCrawl at Yorkshire Sculpture Park on Saturday 10th September 2011. Lynne Chapman who is very active arranging sketch events in the Sheffield area has put together a programme for the day, details below. Happy sketching!

We’re trying to pack a lot in, hence the tight timings, so please get there for 10am, but the timetable will also allow you to join us at any point in the day, if need be:

Meet at 10.00 at the Information Point outside the Learning area, at Kennel Block (see attached map). You need the Park Lane entrance, not the usual main entrance.

There is a car park right by where we are meeting. Parking costs £5 for the day.

A new feature: there will be a sketch kit available to borrow from, if anyone wants to experiment with media (but please bring your own sketchbook as usual).

10.10: Leave the meeting point and walk to the Plensa exhibition area.

Sketch-point 1: 10.15 – 11.15: the Plensa exhibition in the Underground Gallery and the grounds.

11.15: Leave the Plensa exhibition and walk to the Country Park.

Sketch-point 2: 11.25 – 12.25: the Henry Moore sculptures in the Country Park. If wet weather, we will sketch at the Deer Shelter (marked ‘J’ on attached YSP map).

12.25: Walk to the picnic area in the Country Park.

Lunch 12.30 – 1.15: bring a packed lunch (or you can buy a sandwich on arrival, from the Kennel Block Café). The picnic site is close to the YSP Centre, for toilets and further refreshments, but the café will be very busy.

1.15: Walk to the Lakes and Woodland.

Sketch-point 3: 1.25 – 2.25: Cascade Bridge and the Caro sculpture ‘Promenade’ (marked ‘D’ on YSP map). If wet weather, we will sketch across the lake in the woods and from the Shell Grotto.

2.25: Cross Cascade Bridge and walk around Upper Lake.

Sketch-point 4: 2.35 – 3.35: the Boathouse. If wet weather, we will sketch under trees and at the Greek Temple.

3.35: Return to the YSP Learning area at Kennel Block.

3.45 – 4.30: Kennel Block café – the usual opportunity to relax, pass round the sketchbooks and share what we’ve done. We’ll also be taking digital photos of the sketches (obviously, only if you don’t mind) for the YSP website and my SketchCrawl web gallery.

Feel free to stay longer at any sketch location if you wish, but the group will be moving on promptly – we can’t run over, as the café closes at 4.30.

Please remember to wear warm clothing – it could get very cold down by the lake, even on a nice day. An umbrella or waterproofs might also prove essential, as well as either a sketching stool or a sitting mat.

Wakefield Sketch Crawl was in the Cathedral this month, away from the hurl and the burl of Christmas shopping. The Cathedral is very grand and full of carvings and sculptural pieces, ideal for drawing. After a few hours in the quiet It was a shock to return to the streets.

The next World Wide SketchCrawl will be in January 2011.

In the meantime you can join Wakefield SketchCrawl in the peaceful surroundings of the Cathedral in the heart of Wakefield city centre any time between 11am - 3pm on Saturday 4th December.

All you need is something to draw on and something to draw with.

Whilst in the Cathedral please remember to respect the needs of other visitors, walk and talk quietly, switch off mobile phones or put them on silent. Please check with cathedral staff if wishing to take photographs.

If you can't find us we've probably just nipped out for a hot drink or some lunch. Treacey Hall next to the Cathedral serves food and drinks and Deli Central and Mocca Moocho are also close by.

We'll round the day off with a quick drink at a nearby pub, a chance to chat with fellow SketchCrawlers.

Wakefield SketchCrawl - Results

First stop Deli Central in Wakefield Bullring. Warm enough to sit outside (with a delicious hot chocolate).

We head off to Westgate Studios next. It's a last chance to invite people in to this lovely space that has been home to much creative activity over the last three years. Sadly the company is closing down and the studio holders are all in the process of packing up and looking for new places to work. There's a quietness in the corridors today but the process of drawing works its calming magic for an hour.

The Museum is quite busy, lots of interest in the Battle of Wakefield Exhibition which opens today. It takes me a while to settle to drawing as I'm excited to see the specially commissioned comic strip by John Welding. I love the drawing in the strip, there's a great mix of clear detail, wonderful characters and atmospheric scenes. The drawing looks effortless (which I know it isn't) it makes me want to draw. I have a go at one of his Richard Duke of York images, totally failing to capture the subtlety of expression that John manages.

I also draw some 15th century shoes, the label from a humbug jar, a bit of armour, a dead bird and a detail of a late 19th century dress.

Finally we head to The Hop for a quick pint and to look at each other's sketch books.

Wakefield SketchCrawl 16th October - timetable

Join us as we sketch our way around Wakefield as part of the 29th World Wide SketchCrawl and The Big Draw 2010.

Anyone is welcome (children must be accompanied by an adult). All you need is a sketchbook and pencil or pen (and warm clothes in case you want to sketch outside).

The idea is to just have a go, to slow down a little and look at what’s around us. It’s not competitive but if you’re happy with your pictures you can post them on the SketchCrawl website afterwards. Results from the last Wakefield SketchCrawl back in May 2010 can be seen on the SketchCrawl forum.

We’ve put together a programme so you can join us where or when you like, be it for a quick twenty minute sketch or SketchCrawl with us for the full day:

Spent the last week of July in the Lake District. The lush green was quite a shock to the eyes at first (hard to believe there's a hosepipe ban in the area). One foot in front of the other, one mark following another, like breath follows breath.

Travelling back from Birmingham yesterday evening on the train I got a great seat for sketching people. Playing the game of sketching whilst trying not to invade personal space.

Last week I went to Quilts 1700-2010 at London's V & A Museum. It was a wonderful, fascinating show. When I go to such exhibitions the light is rarely strong enough to use a camera, even if one was allowed (which is rare). So it's either the £35 catalogue (not yet) or my sketchbook as a record of what I'd seen.

Tracey Emin's To Meet my Past (2002) is more of an installation than just a quilted cover. It is described as 'a confessional piece that follows the tradition of quilts used as vessels for personal and collective memories'. This was the last item to see in the journey around over 60 quilts. By then all I wanted to do was lie down and go to sleep underneath a quilt . . . the air conditioning was so pretty fierce, and after nearly 3 hours, I was shivering.

A couple of sketches of my grandma's dog Bernie, who was put down last week unexpectedly.

He was a handsome doggy who looked like Basil Rathbone, ( according to my granny-but he really did!) loved tea and biscuits (and we ain't talking doggy biscuits) and walked with an extremely strange gait... I spent a lot of time drawing him at the end of the last and beginning of this year.

He was lovely and will be missed a lot.

The yard around our house is a pretty special place. It's only recently that I've started to sketch some of the details like the ever changing row of sacks along the side of the house and the hopper by the gate.

This has been one of my favourite places for sketching since last autumn when I started a woven textile project based on the parterre in the Rose Garden of Thornes Park. I think the parterre is such a rich subject because its divisions make it possible for the viewer to observe the seasonal changes so distinctly. I also love the texture and colour of the brick wall that surrounds the garden. Today the lavender was out and there were dog roses climbing the east-facing wall. Most of my sketches of the parterre to date have been in pencil and ink, but this is very much a study in colour.

By the sea

This is a pen and dye-based paint sketch made at Porth Iago on the Lyn Peninsula, North Wales. This is where I go to work when the noise of Wakefield gets too much! Iago is a private beach - you have to pay a few pounds but it's worth it. Very good for swimming (when it's warm enough) and it rarely ever gets very crowded. In the second week of June I was the only person on the beach! From where this sketch was made you can see right along the coastline in a north west direction for several miles to the tip of Bardsey Island, the Isle of 20,000 Saints. The weekend before SketchCrawl we were in Alicante. In amongst the fantastic company, great food, fine wine and beautiful weather we did a little sketching and hopefully persuaded Justin and Jose Maria to SketchCrawl in Alicante on Saturday.

For a while it looked like we might also be doing our SketchCrawl in Spain but despite the best efforts of Eyjafjallajökull we're back and ready to SketchCrawl tomorrow.

The first Wakefield SketchCrawl

Join us on Saturday 15th May as we sketch our way around Wakefield as part of the 27th International SketchCrawl. This will be the first Wakefield SketchCrawl and we've put together a list of places so you can join us for the day, a couple of hours or if you just want to drop by for 20 minutes or so.

Who can SketchCrawl?

Anyone is welcome, under 16 year olds must be accompanied by an adult.

We'd really like to hear from you if you in advance if you're planning to be part of SketchCrawl. This will also help us keep you notified of any changes. Email: helen@toastedorange.co.uk

Notes

Bring your own materials. Wear suitable footwear and clothing (you might also want to bring suncream, sunglasses and or a waterproof).

Please be aware of your surroundings for your own safety and welfare and in consideration of other SketchCrawlers and members of the public.

These times are intended as a guide, we'll do our best to stick to them.
